Layering Courtyard

Tucked away in a traditional commercial district near Beijing's Qianmen, the compound covers an area of about 500 square meters. The original building is a siheyuan commercial building with characteristics of the Republic of China. Compared with the houses, the houses here are taller and taller. Along the street on the south side is a row of arched doors and Windows, and the houses on the north side have two stories. Before this transformation, the building structure has been reconstructed as a whole, and there are no doors, Windows and walls in the courtyard, exposing the bold wooden structure beam and column. It is said that it used to be a brothel in the Republic of China, which was turned into a bakery after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The future use of the building is set as a mixed format space for both public activities and living. Therefore, while improving the building quality and infrastructure, this renovation focuses on creating specific scene experiences based on the background of hutong environment to attract urban people with increasingly diversified consumption demands.

Qishe Courtyard

The renovation project is located in a huton within a core old quarter of Beijing. It's a small Siheyuan (a typology of traditional Chinese residence) with three courtyards, with a total length and width of 15 and 42 meters. As approaching the project, the design firm ARCHSTUDIO set two goals: renovating the old and inserting the new. On the one hand, the designers neatened the houses, repaired all the building surfaces, and reinforced the architectural structures, with a view to reproducing the appearance of the traditional Siheyuan. On the other hand, they brought in new living facilities such as bathroom, kitchen and garage, HVAC pipes and lines, as well as new veranda spaces.

Waterside Buddhist Shrine

This is a place for Buddhist mediation, thinking and contemplation， as well as a place satisfying the needs of daily life. The building is located in the forest by the riverside. The design started from the connection between the building and nature, adopts the method of earthing to hide the building under the earth mound while presenting the divine temperament of nature with flowing interior space. A place with power of perception where trees, water, Buddha and human coexist is thus created.

Dingshi Logistics Office Building

The project is an office building of a logistics company, located in an industrial park on the outskirts of a city in Northern China. The industrial park occupies a plain and expansive land area, which is adjacent to an urban road on the north and next to an unexploited urban land on the south. The office building was planned to sit at the middle of the industrial park, with pine trees, lawns and footpaths forming gardens on its north and west sides, while on the south side is a wide front court and a parking lot. The architecture is 85 meters long and 50 meters wide, stretching in east-west direction on a site of about 8,000 square meters. Considering the site is relatively large, ARCHSTUDIO planned the layout of architectural spaces by incorporating courtyards, and created various indoor and outdoor scenes based on functional needs and circulation routes, thereby produced a light-filled, green and vigorous working environment.
